Mikaela’s Wedding Plans
Hi, it’s Mikaela Finn here. I’m so excited that you’ve dropped by to help me plan my wedding. The engagement is real this time! I couldn’t be happier. I’m keeping Sam’s ring – a round cut pink diamond in a nest of white diamonds with a row of diamonds on the band. That’s one decision down and a gazillion left to make. Between delivering babies, running a clinic, the ongoing upgrades to the obstetrical suite, and dealing with the departmental administration, there aren’t many hours left in the day. So I could really use a hand.
First off – how many guests do you think I should invite?
Should it be a grand affair with 500 guests?
I love a big party. We’ll book the Emerson Golf and Country Club. They have a breath-taking venue with a wall of windows overlooking the grounds. I can picture it. Round tables, which seat twelve, draped in elegant linens, sparkling chandeliers overhead, and beautiful floral centerpieces. I’ll be able to have pictures taken outside on the terrace or create a gorgeous vista inside if the weather doesn’t cooperate. The best part of a huge soiree is that I won’t have to limit the guest list. I can invite all my family and friends and the whole Palent family, who have been part of my life since I was little.
A wedding party of 10, I think. Margo as my matron of honour and 4 bridesmaids. Next decision – what colour will they wear?
Or should I stick with a small intimate party for 50?
A small intimate affair. Sounds perfect to me. I’m an only child and Sam’s one of three children in his family. Our parents, a few close friends, Margo of course, and it’s a wrap. I like this idea. Less stress, less planning, still elegant, but quiet. I know the perfect venue. There’s a quaint, farmhouse-turned-restaurant on the water. Pictures against the rustic old building or with a serene water backdrop will be stunning. The wedding party doesn’t have to be big. Margo as my matron of honour and Sam’s sister, Olivia, as my bridesmaid. Next decision – what will colour will they wear?
Lavender?
Oh pretty. A summer wedding, I think. I’ve pinned a gorgeous lavender dress – a flowy A-line chiffon gown that sweeps the floor. The bodice is covered in beading. Flattering for all the bridesmaids. For flowers, I’d love Birds of Paradise. The dark purple geometric design will be a beautiful contrast to the soft dresses. Love it!
I better start shopping for my dress. What do you think?
Black and red?
Edgy. Perfect for a winter wedding. Who doesn’t love a little black dress? Short black princess ball-gown style dresses with a vintage lace neckline and a red sash at the waist. Black high heels. The guys in black tuxes with red bow ties and cummerbunds. And of course, a bouquet of deep red roses. I love this idea.

Sage green?
A summer wedding by the water with Margo and Olivia in sage-green. It’ll be classy and serene. A-line chiffon gowns. Sleeveless with a draped back. They’ll look gorgeous. Better to keep the flowers simple – bouquets of white roses and freesia.

Navy blue?
A beautiful winter wedding by the lake. Mermaid-style long navy gowns with a sweetheart neckline and lace cap sleeves will be stunning against the winter white and icy frozen lake. We’ll have to get pictures of the back of the dresses, too – showing off the lace. Something simple and elegant for the bouquets – white roses. Lovely.

A princess ball gown?
A princess ball gown it is. Each dress is a masterpiece – sleeveless with a sweetheart neckline, a fitted bodice covered in bling and flaring at the waist in layers of organza. This will make my dad cry. I’ll always be his little princess, no matter how old I am. I can’t wait to walk down the aisle on my very special day and dance the night away. Oh, the music!
Or a mermaid-style organza fit and flare?
I love the mermaid-style dress with its tall, clean lines. Hugging the top and flaring at the bottom shows off my curves in the most flattering way. Sam will love this. I love the bit of lace, the hint of fun, with the organza flare. I can’t wait to walk down the aisle on my very special day and dance the night away. Oh, the music!
Do you think we should have an orchestra?
An ten-man orchestra will give us that big band sound and get us moving to pop, jazz, and rock music. Something elegant with violins or fast and lively with the trombones. I think Sam and I better brush up on our waltz, and we’ll have fun with the classics! It’ll be a blast.
Thank you very much for helping me with all these decisions – and hey, you’re invited too! Bring those dancing shoes and join me for a day filled with love and laughter!
Or should we hire a DJ?
A DJ it is! We’ll find just the right mix of old and new music – maybe a polka, a line dance, some romantic slow songs and of course, some energetic fast ones. Everyone up on the dance floor! It’ll be a blast.
