Welcome to the #MFRWHooks blog hop! Before the Whistle, a medical hockey romance, is in the spotlight today. One of the challenges of writing a romance novel is dreaming up ways of getting the two main characters together. There’s usually inherently a reason why at least one of them doesn’t want to spend time with the other. When I wrote my In the Game Hockey Romance Series I worked around that by giving the hero and heroine a mystery to solve. They need each other to solve the case – so they have to work together despite their differences, or indifference, as the case may be. In Before the Whistle, the coach’s new plays for the Clarington Quakes hockey team are being leaked. It’s causing a string of losses and devastating injuries. Ben Matthews, the head athletic therapist, has a theory about what’s going on and enlists the help of Jordyn Kendra to confirm it. He met Jordyn through a mutual friend but he’s seen a lot more of her since he moved into the same condominium complex. 😀
Jordyn Kendra is a talented designer and savvy businesswoman. Spending eighteen hours a day establishing and running a successful business doesn’t leave much time for pursuing a relationship, and frankly she hasn’t really missed it. But when an invitation arrives that could help her fulfill her career dreams, she has to make a decision. What’s harder: going to a gala without a date or finding someone to ask?
Ben Matthews, head athletic therapist for the wildly popular Clarington Quakes hockey team, tends to stand out in a crowd. When Jordyn doesn’t recognize him, it puts a dent in his ego, but he catches her attention when he jumps in to save a life.
She’s a queasy bystander, cowering at the sight of blood, and he’s cool, calm, and confident, which she finds irresistible. With a little prodding from her spirited aunt, Jordyn realizes that she and Ben might be the perfect mismatch.
Before the Whistle – when cool and calm in an emergency is totally hot.
Enjoy an excerpt from Before the Whistle ~
The man who’d walked in as she’d come out of the pool – and wasn’t he gorgeous? – glanced over at the teenagers and then stepped in front of her, blocking their view. “Hi. You’re Jordyn, right? Danni’s friend?”
Jordyn stumbled to a stop. The top of her head came level with the middle of his bare chest. There were only a few advantages to being short. Being eye level with that view – sculpted muscle, smooth skin, broad shoulders – was definitely one of them. She swept her gaze up to his face. He looked familiar, but she couldn’t place him.
“Ben Matthews. I work with the Quakes.” He took the towel from around his neck and handed it to her.
She took it without thinking. “Of course.” He was the head athletic therapist for the Clarington Quakes, the professional hockey team in town. She’d met him a couple of times at team events when she’d accompanied her friend, Dr. Danni Angelo, who was one of the team physicians. She hadn’t realized that impressive physique was under the loose team jacket he usually wore. “Hi, Ben. Yes, I’m Jordyn Kendra. Nice to see you.” She held up the towel. “Ah, thanks, but I don’t really need to take yours. I left one on the chair over there.” She pointed to the lounger at the end of the pool.
He nodded. “That’s okay. I can get another. You go ahead – it’s a bit chilly in here.”
Jordyn tilted her head. Really? The water was cool, but the air felt like a balmy summer day. She shrugged and wrapped the towel around herself. “I didn’t know you lived in this condo.”
He smiled. “Just moved in last month. I had an apartment close to the rink, but when something opened up with a view of the river, I jumped at it.”
“You can’t beat it. You’ll love it here. I’m sure you’re busy with the team, but it really is convenient having the pool, squash courts, and weight room in the building.”
“I’m certainly enjoying the view.” His eyes lit with amusement.
Jordyn nodded. “Well, I should get going. It was good to see you. Maybe we’ll see more of each other.”
He chuckled. “Maybe.”
That was funny? She didn’t get it. “Thanks for the towel.”
“Anytime.”
She walked toward the change room and glanced back as Ben dove into the water. Hmm. Perfect form and hardly a splash. For a huge guy, he was pretty graceful. It looked like he’d done that before. She fleetingly wondered if he ever had trouble with shrinking bathing trunks.
She headed inside and fiddled with the combination of the lock to her locker. She’d rather shower upstairs in her condo, but she’d brought a cover to wear in the elevator. She unwrapped the towel, threw it on the bench, and glanced at her reflection in the mirror across the room. Her heart pounded in shock.
Her bathing suit was completely see-through. Her eyes widened. It left absolutely nothing to the imagination. She groaned and covered her cheeks with her hands. No wonder the teenagers had been so interested.

Her smile widened as the newcomer came up to the counter. “Hi, can I help you?”
He held out a piece of paper. “I have a prescription that needs to be filled.”
Kelly’s smile froze and her heart stuttered as recognition dawned. Jake Ross. The Jake Ross was in her store. The dazzling star forward and newest sensation on the Clarington Quakes hockey team had been the buzz of the town for the last six weeks. He had gone to her high school way back when but had been two years ahead of her. In school. Likely a few more than that in life experience. Those blue eyes that had been plastered all over the Clarington Post were an even deeper shade of sexy in real life. The smile? To die for. And that gorgeous wavy brown hair? Oh. Yum. And he was in her store.
His smile faltered and he frowned. He looked at the nametag pinned above her left breast and swept his gaze across her chest back to her eyes. “Ah, this is a pharmacy, right?”
Her breasts tingled, and she straightened her shoulders. Probably not the best place for a nametag. “Of course. Sorry.” She reached for the prescription he held out and quickly scanned it. Harpen. Thirty pills. She struggled to keep a neutral face. “Is this for you?” She checked the name as he shook his head.
“No, for my dad.”
“Of course.” B.J. Ross, she read. She looked at him. “It’ll just be a moment.”
He nodded and turned to browse in the store as Kelly went into the storeroom behind the counter and found the bottle she needed. She counted out the pills, scooped them into a small pill bottle, and printed off a label.
“Okay, all set.” Kelly walked over to the cash as he returned to the counter. Was it just her or was there a sizzle in the air? “Has your dad had this before?” Please say yes.
He shook his head. “I don’t think so. He’s feeling a bit under the weather. He came back from the doctor with this and asked if I could pick it up for him.”
Kelly nodded and cleared her throat. “I’ve slipped some information about it in the bag, but it’s used to treat erectile dysfunction. It takes about thirty minutes for the full effect–” She stopped at his strangled sound.
He raised his hands in the air, and his eyes went wide. “What?”
Kelly blinked. “It’s used to keep an erection hard so intercourse is pos–”
“Yeah, I know what erectile dysfunction is. How is that going to help my father?”
“Well, if he’s having problems with–”
“No.” Jake shook his head and waved his hands in the air. A flush spread over his cheeks. “I don’t want to discuss my father’s…erectile,” he said with a wince, “problems.” He shook his head. “He told me he had the flu.”
Kelly looked at him. “This won’t help the flu.” She grinned. “But it may make him feel better.”

Are you still suffering the effects of prolonged COVID symptoms? You’re not alone. Studies have suggested that it takes about 3 months to recover from the effects of COVID, but many people are still dealing with fatigue, muscle aches, lung burn, and brain fog 6 – 9 months after the initial diagnosis of COVID. So what can you do?
It’s not really known if the symptoms of long COVID are due to persistent infection, recurrent infection, or a post-infection auto immune response, that is, the body’s own immune system attacking its own cells. We do know that most people are not contagious with it. It’s suspected that it’s due to a multi-organ micro-vasculitis due to endothelial damage. It’s postulated that a few days of hypoxia or low oxygen levels at the start of an infection is the culprit especially in people who did not go to or were not admitted to the hospital.
What we do know:
Medications don’t seem to help. Studies have been done with colchicine and prednisolone and they don’t change the course. It is important to optimize control of other illnesses including diabetes and high blood pressure. But there is no evidence for explicitly treating the COVID symptoms
Rest and recuperate. Eat a healthy diet. Get plenty of sleep.
Online support provides encouragement. Knowing that others are going through the same thing – and are getting better – may give a sense of relief. It’s a real thing.
You don’t need a bunch of tests. It’s wise to form a relationship with a clinician. A careful clinical assessment can exclude rare complications, but most patients don’t need a battery of tests or investigations.
Pace your return to work and other activities. A rehab program and a gradual increase in exercise – with a mind to possible lung and heart inflammation – has been shown to help.
We’re learning more about this every day and there are studies underway to collect information and data. If you’re suffering from long COVID, it would help to share your experience. If you live in Canada consider becoming involved in the CANCOV study. You can contact the researchers at the University of Toronto at https://www.CANCOV.net

The Perfectly Series – there’s something – and someone – for everyone!

Welcome to the #MFRWHooks blog hop! Behind the Bench, a medical hockey romance, is in the spotlight today. Dr. Danni Angelo is the team doctor for the local professional hockey team. She’s worked hard to earn the players respect. So what’s with the new coach’s attitude? When the team spirals out of control, they have to work together to figure out who – and what – is sabotaging the team. Behind the Bench is book two (and a stand-alone story) of In the Game Hockey Romance series – it’s a spicy one!
Dr. Danni Angelo is the team physician for the Clarington Quakes hockey team. She’s worked hard to earn the players’ respect, but the new coach, Trey Mason, is stirring things up, and Danni’s worried her job may be in jeopardy.
Trey finds Danni…distracting. Beauty, brains, and sexy moves on the ice have him uncomfortably attracted. He’s the new guy on the block. He has a reputation to build and a standard to set. The last thing he needs is a complication.
When the team spirals out of control and Danni and Trey get caught up in a drug scandal, things heat up on and off the ice. It’s a whole new game plan…Behind the Bench.
Here’s the hook from Behind the Bench ~
Danni watched the tail end of the in-house broadcast of the news conference and flicked off the screen. How could you not be impressed with that? Trey Mason was confident and eloquent, and spoke in a relaxed and engaging way. The beach-bum blond hair, sculpted cheekbones, and easy smile would win over the non-hockey fans, and his passion and knowledge of the game would impress the followers. He had it all, and landing in a town like Clarington must be a dream come true. For him.
And a nightmare for her.
She had worked part-time as the team physician for the Clarington Earthquakes, Quakes for short, for the past three years. It had taken time to gain the players’ confidence. Being a female physician for a men’s hockey team hadn’t been easy, but she’d built a solid professional relationship.
She loved everything about the job – the energy of the games, working with high-level athletes, and a new clinic in a state-of-the-art arena. She certainly didn’t want it to change because of a new head coach.
Trey Mason couldn’t fire her. Theoretically. That would be up to the owners of the team. He could, however, make her life miserable. And if there was friction between them, it would affect the players, and ultimately, what affected the players influenced the owners. There were two other physicians who shared the job with her and a few more who would be eager to take it on.
He, on the other hand, could be set for a long run if he delivered half of what he’d promised today. She certainly hadn’t seen any charm when he’d walked into the pressroom, and yet it came out in spades when he spoke. She could only hope that her initial impression had been wrong, because between the two of them, it wasn’t likely that he’d be leaving any time soon. Bottom line – she needed to suck it up and get along with the new guy. She sighed. She hated sucking up. She’d thought she was done with that. Apparently not. She shook her head and gritted her teeth. Time to smile and play nice.

Welcome to the #MFRWHooks blog hop! Between the Pipes, a medical hockey romance, is in the spotlight today. Mike Wallace is a goalie for a pro hockey team and not about to let Dr. Sarah Jain, a rookie doctor, call the shots. When they have to work together, sparks fly and ice melts! Between the Pipes is book one of the In the Game Hockey Romance series – it’s a spicy one!
Sarah Jain is a family doctor in a hockey-crazy town. She hates hockey. She hasn’t gone anywhere near a rink in years, until her friend, the team doctor, calls in a favour. Mike Wallace is the starting goalie for the Clarington Quakes, the local professional hockey team. He’s not about to let an injury slow him down or a rookie doctor call the shots.
Sarah and Mike don’t respect each other’s jobs. When they have to work together, sparks fly and ice melts. Can they play a game they both can win?
Love on the ice doesn’t always go smoothly.
Enjoy an excerpt from Between the Pipes ~
“He’ll be in the intensive care unit overnight, but they’ll probably move him to another room tomorrow,” Sarah said. Coherent and professional. So far, so good. She could hardly be blamed for being distracted, though, considering what she was up against.
Ben popped his head into the dressing room. “Mike, how’s the chest?”
Mike’s gaze darted to Sarah and then back to Ben. “Fine,” he responded curtly.
Ben nodded as if that was the answer he’d expected to hear and left with a salute.
Sarah thought his chest was more than fine, but that probably wasn’t what Ben had meant. She looked over at Mike. “What happened?”
“Nothing. I caught a puck in the ribs in the third, but it’s fine.”
“Against your chest pads?”
“No. I must’ve twisted, and it found a hole.”
“Is it painful?” she asked, wondering if he could have injured a rib. From the little she’d watched of the game, it didn’t appear that the players held back when they shot at the goalie. It wouldn’t take much to fracture a rib.
He gave a short laugh with a shake of his head. “I’m a goalie. It would be unusual not to have pain after a game.”
“Maybe I should take a quick look.”
“No. It’s fine,” he replied with a hint of anger and a whole lot of impatience.
Sarah cocked her head to one side and looked at him. Why wouldn’t he want her to check it, to make sure it wasn’t something more serious than a bruise? She grabbed a towel off the bench and threw it at him.
“Hey,” Mike said, startled, and he instinctively reached for the towel. He twisted as he reached out his arm and grimaced, missed the towel, and grabbed his right side. His face was a study in pain, and he scowled at her.
If looks could kill…yikes. She set her bag down and pulled out her stethoscope. “Let me listen to your chest.”
He pressed his lips together, and his eyes darkened, but he stood and turned around.
“Can you take a deep breath?”
“Of course.”
Sure. He splinted his chest, barely moving air in and out, but it sounded normal. She ran her fingers gently over the side of his chest, feeling the ribs. He winced when she palpated a small bump on the right side. It was already starting to bruise. She looked him in the eyes when he turned back to face her. “You know, there’s a pretty good chance you’ve fractured a rib.”
Mike’s expression was stony. “I cannot have a fractured rib. I’ve worked my butt off to become the starting goalie, and I intend to stay that way. I’m not giving that up. I know my own body. This is not a fracture.”
Sarah watched his face. There was more anxiety than anger behind those words. She removed the stethoscope from around her neck and folded it to put it away. “You may be right, but you need an x-ray to be sure.”
“No.”
Sarah’s heart pounded. “I can’t let you play if your rib is fractured. It’s too dangerous,” she said quietly. She willed her hands to stay steady. She was right, she knew it. Danni always worried about players who insisted on playing through an injury. Sarah hadn’t understood how it felt to be in the position of deciding their fate until now. It didn’t feel very comfortable. “You can’t play until I’ve seen the x-ray result.”
“You can’t do that.”
They both knew she could. She stayed silent. He drew himself up and reined in the anger.
“I’ll transmit the requisition to the hospital,” she said.
“Fine.” He didn’t look at her. That hadn’t sounded fine.
“As soon as I hear the result, I’ll let you know.” She picked up her bag and headed out.
That went well, she thought ruefully. Man, she hated hockey.

Enjoy an excerpt from Time for the Doctor ~
He knew this town and every single person in it. There was a lot more to medicine than just treating their illnesses. For that reason alone, he, Dr. Tash Bannon, and not some random outsider, should be the one sitting behind the desk in his office.
He strode down the hall. First things first.
The door to his office was wide open. He gave a perfunctory knock and stepped inside. She’d angled the desk in the center of the room. And moved the clock.
“Can I help you?” Melissa looked at him with raised eyebrows.
He rocked back on his heels. Defiance made the green of her eyes sparkle. He swallowed the comment about the clock. Make peace. “Good morning.” Her hair was a rich chestnut, the color of fine whiskey. She had it pulled up into some kind of fancy twist. It would have been intimidatingly sophisticated except for the one curl that had escaped at the nape of her neck. The hint of whimsy was intriguing.
“Good morning?” She tilted her head and looked at him with raised eyebrows.
“How’s it going?”
“Fine.”
She leaned back in her chair and folded her arms across her chest. Her body language said it all: he wasn’t welcome. So, she had a chip on her shoulder. He could work around it. “I thought I’d drop by and offer my expertise in case you were looking for advice about any of the patients. I figured you might need a hand…”
Surprise flickered in her eyes. She opened her mouth to say something but stopped herself. She pressed her lips together and looked at him with narrowed eyes. After a minute of uncomfortable silence, she leaned forward. “Actually, there is one thing you could help me with. The leg of that chair,” – she pointed to one of the chairs in front of her desk – “is broken. I was told to take it to the receiving bay, and they’d arranged to have it repaired. If you wouldn’t mind dropping it off, that’d be super helpful.”
Tash rocked back on his heels. “Of course.” He hadn’t come to deal with the furniture. “I heard that Lorne Henstock was admitted to the hospital a couple of days ago. He’s–”
She raised her hand. “I’m sorry. To protect patient confidentiality, I really can’t discuss individual patients with you.”
“That’s ridiculous. I’ve known these people a lot longer than you have. It’s nothing they wouldn’t share with someone on the street.”
“If they choose to share information about their health, that’s one thing. It’s another thing entirely for me to speak about it.”
“Even if it would make you a better doctor?”
Her eyes glinted. “I’m sure your carefully documented notes have all the information I need. Now if you don’t mind, I have to get back to work.”
Tash grit his teeth. “Of course.” He set a small burlap bag on her desk. “I brought a welcoming gift. It’s a bear katsina. The bear katsina has great strength that’s used to cure the sick.”
“Thank you. That’s very kind,” she said stiffly.
He shoved his hands in his pockets. “You’re welcome. I’ll leave you to it, then.” He turned on his heel.
“The chair?”
Without a word he walked over and picked up the chair. “Glad to be of service.” The sarcasm was probably lost on her.
