Day 3 ~ Hopi Katsina!

Posted November 24, 2018 By Linda

It’s Day 3 of the 10-day Countdown to the release of Time for the Doctor! There’s a special pre-order price of 99cents ($1.30 Canadian). Only 3 more days! Today I pay homage to the Hopi tradition of honouring katsina.

Time for the Doctor is set in Copper Mills, Arizona, which was once home to a Hopi tribe. Up until I wrote this story, all of my romantic comedies have been set in small Ontario towns. So this was new for me! I wanted to pay homage to the Hopi culture and tradition in my story. The reason Melissa accepts the job in Copper Mills is because she was told that her adopted son had Hopi heritage, and she wanted to learn more about it with him. When Melissa arrives in Copper Mills, Tash brings her a gift of a Hopi katsina. Tash enjoys carpentry and wood–carving as a past time and has carved katsina figures and given them as special gifts.

Hopi children learn the names and purposes of different katsina through wooden “dolls” or works of art. There are over three hundred different katsina, which are benevolent supernatural entities. They represent the spirits of all things in the universe, including animals, plants, rocks, stars, plants, and ancestors who have lived good lives. They inspire and teach good behaviour and infuse Hopi spirit with meaning, balance, and connectedness with the past. Traditionally, there were several katsina ceremonies throughout the year when the katsina were celebrated and the figures were gifted to children.

I thought this was a beautiful and meaningful Hopi tradition and wanted to incorporate it into my story. Can you guess what type of katsina Tash makes for Melissa? Only 3 more days to find out!

Day 5 ~ Tips for Lowering Blood Pressure!

Posted November 22, 2018 By Linda

It’s Day 5 of the 10-day Countdown to the release of Time for the Doctor! Today Melissa and Tash share 5 tips for reducing blood pressure. Time for the Doctor is only 99c until the release day on November 27!

Tash and Melissa are both doctors who are general internists. They deal with more complex medical health issues. One of the common problems that they see is hypertension – it sounds like it means high stress levels, but it’s actually high blood pressure. Making the diagnosis of high blood pressure can be tricky – measurements have to be taken more than once, in and out of the office. The readings are more accurate if you sit quietly with your feet on the floor and avoid coffee and smoking for thirty minutes prior (or better yet, don’t smoke ever). It’s not an exact science. If you’ve been told your blood pressure is high, there are some things you can do to try to lower it and avoid medication. Here are 5 tips from Tash and Melissa to help:

  1. Eat less salt. Put the saltshaker away and watch for hidden salt in prepared foods. Even if a recipe calls for salt, sometimes a pinch (or none) will do.
  2. Weight loss. If you’re overweight or obese, every pound of weight loss can bring your blood pressure down 1 mmHg. Aim for your ideal Body Mass Index.
  3. The Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) include a diet high in vegetables, fruits, low-fat dairy products, whole grains, poultry, fish, and nuts and low in sweets, sugar-sweetened beverages, and red meats. This diet is rich in potassium, magnesium, calcium, protein, and fiber but low in saturated fat, total fat, and cholesterol.
  4. Find something that you have fun doing and aim for three to four 40-minute sessions per week.
  5. Adult men with hypertension should drink less than two alcoholic drinks each day and for women it’s less than one alcoholic drink per day. Hate to be party poopers, but if it means staying off medication for life, it’ll be worth it.

It’s Day 6 of the 10-day Countdown for Time for the Doctor! Release day is November 27 and until then the Copper Mills romantic comedy is on sale for 99cents!

Melissa works long hours at the hospital so she loves this quick and easy fish taco recipe. It’s perfect for summer (and to brightened winter) served with a light and fresh mayo and salsa.

Fish Tacos with Zesty Lime

Pat dry and sprinkle 4 pieces of white fish with salt, pepper, and 1 Tbsp of lime juice. Fry with 2 tsp of olive oil in a non-stick frying pan.

Serve in warm tacos with Lime Mayo and Salsa.

Lime Mayo

Whisk together ¼ tsp each of chili powder, ¼ tsp cumin powder, 1 tsp lime zest and 2 Tbsp lime juice to 1 cup mayonnaise.

Mango Salsa

Dice and add together: 1 mango, 1 red pepper, 1 avocado, ¼ red onion, 1 cucumber. Toss with 1 Tbsp lime juice and sprinkle with 1 Tbsp fresh cilantro. Enjoy!

Day 7 ~ Meet Dr. Melissa Sinclair!

Posted November 20, 2018 By Linda

It’s Day 7 of the 10-day Countdown! Meet Dr. Melissa Sinclair from Time for the Doctor. Release day is November 27 and until then it’s only 99cents!

Hi Everyone! I’m Melissa Sinclair. I’m as excited as you to visit Copper Mills. If you come for a visit, we could explore this beautiful corner of Arizona together. I’ve just arrived from Denver, and I’ve brought my son, Chayton. He’s four years old and curious! We’re both keen to visit the Painted Mesa and learn more about the Hopi tribe who once called it home. I adopted Chayton two years ago and was told that he had Hopi heritage, so it made it easier to accept the offer of a locum at Copper Mills General. I expect to be here for a few months through the summer and work at the internal medicine clinics. Apparently the general internist who usually runs the clinics is taking a three-month vacation. Lucky him! Oh well, I’ll balance work with spending time with Chayton – the best of both worlds since I love being a mom as much as I love being a doctor. Hope to see you soon!

Day 8 ~ Meet Dr. Tash Bannon!

Posted November 19, 2018 By Linda

It’s Day 8 of the 10-day Countdown! Meet Dr. Tash Bannon from Time for the Doctor. Release day is November 27 and it’s only 99cents!

Dr. Tash Bannon here. So pleased to meet you. I’m taking a break from the internal medicine clinic at Copper Mills General Hospital. We have a small 15-bed hospital, but our town of 1500 swells way beyond that in the summer with the influx of tourists here to enjoy the hiking, fishing, copper mine tours, and the small town hospitality we’ve become famous for. I wish everyone could stay healthy while they visit, but unfortunately that’s not the case. We get busy dealing with everything from low blood sugars in diabetics to high blood pressure in hypertensive patients. Every day is different – that’s the beauty of medicine.

I don’t have much spare time, but when I do I’ve got a couple of carpentry projects on the go. I started to renovate my kitchen, I’m embarrassed to say, a few years ago, and then got busy with work. Ah well, it can certainly wait and sick patients can’t.

If you’re by this way, come say hi. You can pretty much guarantee that I’ll be hanging out at Copper Mills General Hospital.

Day 9 – Welcome to Copper Mills

Posted November 18, 2018 By Linda

It’s Day 9 of the 10-day Countdown for Time for the Doctor! Release day is November 27 and until then it’s only 99cents! Pre-order before the price increases to $2.99 😀

Visit Copper Mills, Arizona – a small town with a heart as big as the wide-open spaces and a history of making dreams come true.

Welcome to Copper Mills, Arizona, where love and legend are woven into fascinating stories. Each brand new romance by a different author will feature a couple in the town or in the surrounding area. Putting these stories down before you’ve turned the last page will be a challenge because the characters are wonderfully diverse, fun, funny, engaging, and will have you rooting for them…long past your bedtime.

The people you’ll meet might be descendants of Harlan MacKenzie—who discovered the original copper vein in the nearby mountain—or those who were drawn to the community because of the big hearts and warm welcomes.

One side of the town is bordered by Painted Mesa, a flat-topped hill with steep sides, once home to a Hopi tribe. On the other is the old copper mine. Tourists come for a wide range of outdoor activities including hiking, fishing, and riding, or to simply stroll Main Street and enjoy the Mom-and-Pop businesses, wide sidewalks, and welcoming benches which invite a person to sit a spell … and strike up a conversation.

In Copper Mills, anything is possible—danger, dreams, and second chances. But in the end, love will reign and a happy ending is always guaranteed.

Come stay awhile in Copper Mills and enjoy all the stories!
