Kelly has set up her pharmacy to accommodate people who struggle with literacy. With her flair for drama and colour, the displays are set up to be cues for the products she sells. Kelly wanted to shine a light on the problem of literacy and what you can do to help.

1. Adequate literacy skills are defined as “the ability to understand, evaluate, use, and engage with written texts to participate in society, to achieve one’s goals, and to develop one’s knowledge and potential.” Literacy skills are needed to manage finances, health, and the workplace.

2. Literacy is measured in 3 main areas: prose literacy (the ability to understand and use information from written material), document literacy (the ability to find and use information in different document formats) and quantitative literacy (math and numbers in printed material).

3. Adults who have inadequate literacy skills are more likely to have worse health outcomes, decreased earnings potential, lower levels of civic participation, and fewer life opportunities. Out of six variables to determine income, literacy had the most significant effect, followed by education.

4. Almost 50% of Canadians adults can’t work well with words or numbers. About 17% function at the lowest level and wouldn’t be able to read the dosage instructions on a medicine bottle.

5. Family literacy refers to the many ways families develop and use literacy skills, from enjoying a storybook together, to playing word games, singing, writing to a relative or friend, sharing day-to-day tasks such as making a shopping list or using a recipe, and surfing the internet. Encourage children to read – visit the library and introduce books about topics that they are keen on.

6. Most communities have free or low-cost literacy programs to help. Their goal is to ensure adequate literacy for every adult and child. If you know someone who could use a hand, encourage them to get the help they need. And consider volunteering if you can!

It’s day 8 of the 10-day Countdown!! Meet Jake Ross. Beyond the Face-Off is Book 3 of the In the Game Hockey Romance series. (Book 3 already!) August 24 is the big day. Woohoo!

Hi Everyone – this is Paige Hunt. I’m head of media relations for the Clarington Quakes. I know you dropped by to meet Jake Ross today, but Jake isn’t really a big fan of this sort of thing. Not only is he an extremely talented player, but he’s humble with it and wouldn’t feel comfortable shifting the spotlight from the effort of the whole team. So, I made a deal with him – he’s off visiting a child in the hospital for the Make-A-Wish Foundation and, in return, I’m here covering this for him. Win-win all round. When Jake joined the Clarington Quakes hockey club late this season, it made headlines. And it hasn’t slowed down! Every time he steps on the ice, there’s reason to cheer. We’re excited to welcome him back to Clarington, where he grew up, and even more excited to watch him play for the Quakes. As Coach Mason said, “Jake brings an outstanding athleticism, a drive to win, and leadership on and off the ice.” He’s a talented player right in our own backyard. How lucky is that? The Quakes had an amazing playoff run this season and Jake Ross was on fire, leading the league in points. Right now, the team is enjoying a well-deserved summer break, but we can’t wait to see what next season holds – no doubt more magical hockey and maybe a playoff run that ends in a cup? It’s our time, Clarington! And keep your eye on Jake Ross – he’s hot!
