Next title off to the editor!

Posted August 13, 2020 By Linda

I’m excited that I’ve finally finished editing the fourth book in the Dr. Brogan Corkie Matchmaking Doctor series! It’s off to the editor for the professional edit. I like to thoroughly edit it myself – and catch all the pesky spelling mistakes and awkward phrasing. It saves money, and I make sure that the manuscript is as tight as it can be.

I finally decided on the title Don’t Mess with Christmas. Because, you know, love can seriously mess with Christmas! Release day is scheduled for November 4, 2020!!

It’s Release Day!!

Don’t Unravel the Past

Dr. Brogan Corkie is happily semi-retired from medicine and now has time for other hobbies. Her passion for food is second only to her skill at matchmaking!

Years ago, Dr. Jay Landon kissed a sexy stranger with violet eyes. He was instantly enamoured – until he saw the engagement ring on her finger and the angry-looking dude by her side. She walked away with a piece of his heart.

Dr. Brenna Locket is in Mapleton for a conference and plans to stay for a six-month sabbatical to write a book. Her colourful past has prepared her well for a job she loves as an obstetrician-gynecologist with a special focus on sexual health. If her vivacious personality, natural empathy, and expert knowledge didn’t set her apart, her violet eyes and curly black hair certainly would.

Brogan doesn’t know their history, but the spark between Jay and Brenna is undeniable. She’s intrigued…and a matchmaking scheme is hatched. Now, if only Brenna could leave her past behind. Because unravelling the past might just derail the future.

Day 3 of the 10-day Countdown!

Posted August 1, 2020 By Linda

It’s day 3 of the 10-day Countdown!! In Don’t Unravel the Past, Hampton Shorley asks Dr. Brogan Corkie about direct-to-consumer genetic testing. Her advice is “buyer beware.” She’s here to tell you why.

Don’t Unravel the Past is Book 3 of the Dr. Brogan Corkie Matchmaking Doctor series, sweet medical romantic comedies! August 4 is the big day. Woohoo!

Dr. Brogan Corkie’s beau, Hampton Shorley, is burning with curiosity about his ancestry. He was adopted as a baby and never really knew his parents. He’s done a bit of research and has decided to send away for a genetic testing kit. Here’s what he (and you) need to know about direct-to-consumer genetic testing kits.

Unlike clinical genetic testing, direct-to-consumer testing can be purchased online without a physician’s referral.

  1. Most kits test for a limited set of variants associated with a potential risk for conditions. Unfortunately, most of the conditions are rare and not all can be prevented or treated at this time. Are you sure you really want to know about them?
  2. The labs aren’t necessarily accredited and the results may not be interpreted in a standardized way so the validity and clinical usefulness is questionable.
  3. The testing is often not clinically indicated, which means people don’t have specific symptoms of the disease. So even if the test is positive, it doesn’t mean you have the disease. The positive predictive value of the test can be modified by things like whether the mutation is incompletely penetrant (has an effect), gender (some diseases are linked to the sex chromosomes and don’t fully manifest themselves), or are multifactorial (like Alzheimer’s).
  4. You get the results but you don’t get the genetic counseling that goes with it. And if you take the results to a doctor it is hard to interpret because of all the variables (see point 3).
  5. Two recent studies with over 1,000 participants showed that even if people are told they have a higher risk of developing something like cancer, they didn’t change their lifestyle habits with respect to diet and exercise.
  6. This is a biggie: Some companies sell your genetic data to third parties like biobanks or pharmaceutical companies. Have you heard about people finding out they have multiple siblings or having their results used to track down criminals? You click on a button giving consent – be sure you understand what you’re consenting to. The Officer of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada has created a document which helps to explain the risks: https://www.priv.gc.ca/en/privacy-topics/health-genetic-and-other-body-information/02_05_d_69_gen/

Do you think Hampton followed her advice? 😀

Day 5 of the 10-day Countdown!

It’s day 5 of the 10-day Countdown!! Meet Dr. Brogan Corkie. Don’t Unravel the Past is Book 3 of the Dr. Brogan Corkie Matchmaking Doctor series ~ matchmaking at its funniest! August 4 is the big day. Woohoo!

Well, this is certainly a pleasure! I’m Dr. Brogan Corkie. I’m a mother, a doctor, and by far the most fun, an amateur chef. I’ve been experimenting with recipes for years using my two children, Mae and Finn, as guinea pigs. They’re onto me now, though, and it’s harder to convince them that the substitutions I make are going to be just as tasty. They generally are. 😀

They know me well at the International Market, a small grocery store within walking distance to my home in Mapleton, Ontario. I love to try unusual ingredients!

I’ve been a family physician for forty years now, and I’ve pared back my hours at the clinic to make more time in the kitchen. My fridge and freezer are getting mighty full, so I’ve branched out to find more victims…er…taste testers. I always thought it would be worthwhile to start a catering business and combine my medical skills with my cooking skills to help people who are laid up at home, recovering from an illness or injury. It’s worked out better than I could have imagined – and lo and behold – I’ve thrown a little matchmaking into the mix. It’s been fun to open their eyes to new ways of thinking – about food and love! There’s always something fun happening in retirement – onto the next adventure!

Enjoy an excerpt ~

When the doorbell rang, Brogan tossed more flour on the counter and called out in her most harried voice. “Brenna, I hate to bother you, but would you mind getting that? I’m up to my ears in flour.” She crossed her fingers at the little white lie.

The desk chair scraped back. “I don’t mind at all, Brogan.”

Brenna tugged on her T-shirt and ran a hand through her hair to subdue some of the wayward curls before opening the door. She stilled and her smile froze in place. Her recollection was swift – steel blue eyes glinting behind a goalie mask, a stolen moment, a fleeting kiss. He hadn’t changed much in seven years, although his eyes seemed bluer and his shoulders broader. He certainly hadn’t lost that cocky smile.

Jay stiffened and then his smile slowly widened. “Well, if it isn’t Doctor Sniper/Cheater.”

“It was a good goal, Doctor Sore Loser. I couldn’t help it if I was more talented than you.” Brenna leaned against the door frame. “It’s been a while.”

“Indeed it has.” But he’d recognize those violet eyes and curly hair anywhere. If truth be told, he was a complete sucker for them. They’d haunted his dreams since the moment he’d met her, even if she had just scored the winning goal. She’d robbed his hockey team of a spot in the final and stolen his heart in one fell swoop. “You know, I don’t think we ever formally introduced ourselves. I’m Jay Landon.”

They’d met at MedGames, an annual weekend of friendly competition between medical schools. Teams went head to head in a variety of sports ranging from table tennis and foosball to volleyball, basketball, broom hockey, and ice hockey.

After their hockey game, the teams had stayed to watch a televised gold medal game between the Canadian and the American men’s hockey teams. When Canada scored the winning goal, the room had erupted in cheers. There’d been hugging, high-fives, and a few celebratory kisses. He wasn’t sure how it had happened, but his lips had locked with hers. In one stunning moment, he’d fallen hook, line, and sinker. And then had noticed the engagement ring on her finger.

He glanced at her hand. It was bare, no rings at all.

“Brenna Locket.”

His eyebrows went up. “The Brenna Locket?” How had he not known that? Over the years he’d kept his eyes and ears to the ground, wondering, half-hoping that some day he’d run into her again. All he’d really known about her was that she played hockey as a forward and had been a student at Western University. He’d tried to find out who she was but eventually told himself to let it go. He’d never hit on a married woman.

She grinned. “The one and only. I enjoyed your talk on Tuesday. I’m still into all kinds of sports; I learned a lot.”

He gave her a puzzled frown. “You were there?” There was no way he would have missed her, but he had seen her name on the list of guest lecturers. “Oh, you must have watched it by video link. I was told they were filming, but the cameras were very discreet.”

Brenna mentally kicked herself. She’d forgotten she’d gone as Amber. “Yeah, I have access to it as a speaker.” That was true. She had no idea how it worked, but they’d sent her a link.

“When is your talk?” Jay drank in the sight of her – the violet eyes, heart-shaped face, smooth flawless skin, disarming smile, and svelte compact athletic body. For him, the attraction, the pull, was as strong as the first time they’d met. It was bewitching, and no less inappropriate if she was married.

“This afternoon at three.”

“I’ll have to attend.”

“I’m busting the latest sex myths and hosting a Q and A. Should be fun.” She suppressed a chuckle at the flush that rose on his cheeks. “I won’t be insulted if you give it a pass.”

He’d be there. Now that he found her, he couldn’t, didn’t want to, stay away.

Day 7 of the 10-Day Countdown!

Posted July 28, 2020 By Linda

It’s day 7 of the 10-day Countdown!! Meet Dr. Jay Landon ~ a very sexy orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine specialist.  Don’t Unravel the Past is Book 3 of the Dr. Brogan Corkie Matchmaking Doctor series ~ a second-chance sweet romance with a twist in the tale! August 4 is the big day. Woohoo!

Hey, how’s it going? Jay Landon. I was asked to drop by and introduce myself.

I’m one of the orthopedic surgeons at Gateway General Hospital, and my subspecialty is sports medicine. That’s the boring stuff. Haha The really cool thing that’s happening right now is that I’m up for an award, the Surgical Specialty Research Award. It’s a national award open to the surgical specialties, and if I win, it comes with a jackpot of one million dollars, which I’d use toward setting up a Movement and Mechanics Lab. It’ll be affiliated with the hospital and the research possibilities are mind blowing. To say I’m passionate about this lab getting off the ground would be an understatement. Not all of the hospital board members, the people who have the final say on how hospital funds and property are used, are on board with it, but I’m hoping to change their minds. An external funding boost wouldn’t hurt one bit. I’ve agreed to give a talk at the local Updates in Medicine Conference. I figured getting some public support for the lab wouldn’t hurt.

If I’m not trying to secure funding and support for the lab, I’m cycling, running, or swimming. I’m training for a triathlon, but really, I love any sport. In the winter, I play ice hockey and love to get out to snowboard. I’ve met some of the most interesting people playing sports – including one encounter with a violet-eyed woman who left an ever-lasting impression. But that’s another story.

Well, it’s time for me to get back to work. I’m in the OR first thing tomorrow morning, and I still have to put the finishing touches on my talk for the Updates in Medicine conference. Drop by Mapleton on May 27 – 30 and come to the conference. There’s sure to be some interesting speakers!

Day 8 of the 10-Day Countdown!

Posted July 27, 2020 By Linda

It’s day 8 of the 10-day Countdown!! Meet Dr. Brenna Locket. She’s a busy family doctor and happily single. Dr. Brogan Corkie, doctor-turned-chef, won’t be cooking up love and romance in her life. Or so she says.

Don’t Unravel the Past is Book 3 of the Dr. Brogan Corkie Matchmaking Doctor series ~ a fun stand-alone romantic comedy with a twist in the tale! August 4 is the big day. Woohoo!

Hello there! Brenna Locket here. Yes, that Brenna Locket. I’m an obstetrician-gynecologist and host of Busting  Sexual Health Myths. You may have heard it on the radio, caught a podcast on the net, or seen my TV show. Either way, I’m very pleased to meet you. I came to Mapleton for the Updates in Medicine Conference, but I’m hanging around for another six months. Don’t you love Mapleton? I visited it once when Mae Corkie invited me to spend Christmas with her and her family. It’s a little slice of heaven on earth. Right then and there, I adopted Mae’s mom, Dr. C., as my own. A gracious host and phenomenal cook, Dr. Brogan Corkie does it all. Advice and hugs are given freely!

After I graduated, life became crazy busy. There was no time to squeeze in a visit, but we never lost contact. Mae takes after her mom in that regard. When I got the go ahead for a six-month sabbatical, I wanted someplace peaceful and quiet to chip away at the book I’ve been promising my fans – and of course, Mapleton sprang to mind. Not only was it top of the list, it garnered every spot underneath. Dr. C very kindly offered me Mae’s old room, but I rented a cottage just outside of Mapleton. And if I know Dr. C., she’ll be filling my fridge and freezer with enough food to feed an army. What did I tell you – best set-up ever!

If you asked what was the most unique thing about me, I would have to say it’s my violet eyes. It’s rare, I know. No, I’m not an albino. No, I don’t wear contact lenses. It’s just me. My aunt had violet eyes; I figured it was embedded somewhere in the family genes. They say that Alexandria’s Genesis is a myth. But what can I tell you – I’m exceptionally healthy, I have extraordinary luck at sports, and I have violet eyes. I will let you in on a little secret though – I have been known to wear contact lenses – and occasionally a wig – when I don’t want to be recognized. My violet eyes tend to make an impression.

According to the brochure, the cabin I rented is right on the lake comes complete with sandy beach and a fire pit. So if you’re in the area and at loose ends, it will be my turn to extend a warm welcome. Bring your swimsuit and stay for s’mores!
