Piper hatches a plan to get it back, but her plan relies on Brent Dean, popular forward of the Brighton Edge hockey team, to finagle a dinner invitation to gain access to her neighbour’s house.

Brent thought the invite from the stunningly beautiful cardiologist was based on a thoughtful gesture to welcome new neighbours to Brighton. He didn’t realize the gig included subterfuge, thievery, and a fake engagement. But he didn’t get to where he is without a lot of hustle and determination, and since he’s always up for some fun, let the games begin.

Enjoy this excerpt from Bro ~ In this scene, Senth is playing with a new tool he acquired for work as a thief, a cloak that makes him invisible. And he’s about to test it on a room filled with bullies–his peers.

Senth shook out the midnight blue cloak. The garment resembled the previous cape he’d worn for years, and had the standard lining with the Guild symbol, a skeleton key behind a slashed circle. Supposedly, the cloth inside had the same ability to view images and video. The back fell straight down from his shoulders to the ground. Multiple pockets allowed him to carry equipment and stash items. Hidden sleeves let him wear it as a coat.

Best of all, it had room for all his tools and lockpicks.

After slipping it on, he pulled on gloves of the same material. When he lifted the hood, the Nightstealth film embedded in the cloth activated.

His body disappeared.

For a moment, he had the sensation of floating, and threw out his arms to steady himself. Recalling his training, he closed his eyes to reorient himself, took a deep, steadying breath and opened them.

The world stabilized.

The cloak had fooled him, but how well would that sucker work on a group of thieves who’d been training to use it for weeks?

Senth strode right through the entrance to the Great Hall and straight to the thieves waiting in line. Taking care not to disturb the air and cause a breeze where none should be, he strolled along the crowd, looking each person in the eye. The thrum of voices continued, unabated. He stepped back, waved his arms. Jumped up and down.

Nada, zip, zilch, zero.

No one glanced his way.

No response.

No disturbance in the hive.

He’d been erased from the room.

Senth pumped both fists in the air.

His professors had droned on about the layers of nano-reflector-whatevers and the history of its development. Huge yawner. What mattered was it worked.

If this upgrade fooled copbots as well as it did people, he’d live up to his guild name, Blue Shadow. And how perfect was that?

“I need a fiancé.” Piper Roblin tucked her purse under the stool and sat down heavily. Her shoulder-length hair, the colour of rich dark chocolate flounced around her heart-shaped face. Her three best friends, already seated at the workstations waiting for the cooking class to begin, turned and stared at her with identical expressions: open-mouthed shock.

Bailey Jansen, a dermatologist with an adventurous spirit, and the most outspoken of their group, was the first to recover. “Excuse me?”

Piper pulled back her shoulders, trying to make the most of her one-hundred-fifty-seven-centimeter height, and raised her chin. “I need a man, a hockey player to be exact.”

Bailey grinned at the determination in Piper’s brown eyes and waved a hand. “I’ve been saying the same thing for months.”

Day 5 ~ Know the 5 Warning Symptoms of a Heart Attack!

It’s day 5 of the 10-day Countdown!! Love and the Hockey Heist, book 2 of the Laugh-out-Loud Hockey Caper Romance series will be live on June 12. Woohoo! Today, I’m shining a spotlight on 5 symptoms of a heart attack that you shouldn’t ignore.

In honour of Dr. Piper Roblin being a cardiologist, I thought I’d share 5 symptoms of a heart attack that you shouldn’t ignore. A heart attack or myocardial infarction happens because the blood supply to your heart muscle is inadequate. It can happen when the arteries to the heart muscle are blocked or partially blocked, so the muscle can’t get enough oxygen to function. Sometimes it happens during or after strenuous activity, but for some people it happens at rest. These symptoms are your body’s way of telling you that something needs to be done to help your heart muscle – don’t ignore them!

Chest discomfort – a pressure sensation in the centre or left side of your chest. Patients often describe it as a heaviness or like something is sitting on their chest.
Shortness of breath – having trouble catching your breath.
Sweating
Discomfort that radiates up your neck to your jaw or shoulder or radiates down your arm especially the left arm.
Feeling weak, lightheaded, or faint. Sometimes patients also experience nausea.

If you experience these symptoms – and you don’t need to have them all – you need to seek medical attention pronto. And don’t drive yourself to emerg – call an ambulance, or if the symptoms are still mild, have someone else drive you. There’s a risk that you could actually pass out and you don’t want to be behind the wheel of a car if that happens. The good news is that we have ways to open up the arteries to improve the blood flow, and the sooner it’s done the better. If you don’t act, it could cause permanent damage to the heart muscle – you don’t want that. Know the signs and act on them.

Day 6 ~ Enjoy a GF Vegetarian Recipe!

It’s day 6 of the 10-day Countdown!! Love and the Hockey Heist is book 2 of the Laugh-out-Loud Hockey Caper Romance series. Dr. Piper Roblin is trying to take back what is rightfully hers – in the wrongfully worst way. Following the clues and falling in love…It’ll be live on June 12. Woohoo!

Today I’m sharing a recipe for a gluten-free vegetarian burger – delish!! Piper is vegetarian and is always looking for new recipes. Here’s a delicious burger which is high in fibre and protein. Serve on a gluten-free bun with cucumber slices, cilantro, and melted cheese. I like it with mustard, too.

Gluten-free Lentil Almond Burger

1 cup dried green lentils

227g cremini mushrooms, sliced

2 shallots, diced

2 Tbsp canola oil

1 Tbsp garam masala

1 tsp garlic powder

1 tsp ground cumin

½ tsp mustard powder

pinch salt

½ cup cilantro leaves

100g (approx. 1 cup) ground almonds

Add dry lentils to boiling water and let simmer for 15 minutes. Strain and add to food processor. In large non-stick skillet, heat 1 Tbsp oil and fry mushrooms and shallots until soft, approx. 5 minutes. Stir in garam masala, garlic powder, cumin, mustard powder, and salt and stir for 2 minutes. Add to food processor along with the cilantro and almonds. Pulse until combined. Shape into 1 cm thick patties. Heat remaining oil in skillet and fry patties until golden brown, about 2 minutes per side. Serve with gluten free buns. Enjoy!

Hey, how’s it going? Brent Dean here. For those of you who don’t know me, I’m a forward for the Brighton Edge. I’ve been with the team for four years and have just signed on for another four. We’re just coming off a successful season and have a bit of downtime to enjoy the summer.

I’m actually pumped right now. A good buddy and teammate of mine, Del Braebury, just passed along a message – a request really – through his fiancée, Abigail Parker. Abigail’s friend, Piper Roblin, is looking for a date for a dinner party. Now Piper might not remember this, but I met her in passing at a fundraiser that Abigail organized for the hospital. As hockey players, we often get requests to show up at some function or other, and since we have more time in the summer, we try to oblige them. But this time, I’m happy to volunteer. To say that I’d love to get to know Dr. Piper Roblin more is an understatement. Not sure why anyone so beautiful and smart would have trouble finding a date, but I’m not going to question it! Love and the Hockey Heist, book 2 of the Laugh-out-Loud Hockey Caper Romance series, is a fun stand-alone romantic comedy! June 12 is the big day. Woohoo!

Hi there – Piper here! Thanks so much for stopping by to say hello! I’d love your opinion about something that’s creating a bit of a dilemma for me right now. Here’s the scenario: I believe someone stole something from me. There was no misunderstanding about “lending” it out. There was no request to borrow it. Straight up, they took it without asking. If that’s the case, then I’m justified in stealing it back, right? I mean, it was mine in the first place. I know what you’re thinking – how can I be so sure who took it? It’s possible I just misplaced it, but I don’t think so. I have a pretty good idea who snitched it.

The item in question isn’t even worth much, but it has sentimental value to me. At the very least, I think it’d be worth a snoop around. The dilemma arises if I do find it in their possession. Should I confront them about it or would it be better to let them save face and just slip it into my pocket when they’re not looking? If you’re anything like me, you hate confrontations. Wouldn’t it be better to return it to its rightful owner (ME!) with as little fanfare as possible? Yes? You agree? *beams* I knew I could count on your support. But let’s just keep this between us. I’m not sure my nani would agree. *winces*

Other than considering a bit of a moral transgression, life is good. My work as the chief of cardiology at Brighton General Hospital keeps me hopping. Love it all, though.

I don’t have any family in town – other than my surrogate sisters aka my three best friends, Abigail, Sierra, and Bailey. My parents are the perfect distance away. Close enough to visit by car, but far enough away to have some space, which is healthy for all of us. The joys of being an only child!

I’m pretty sure Bailey would be on board with any scheme I cook up, but not so much Abigail and Sierra. I guess we’ll find out. Thanks for weighing in today and feel free to leave a comment below. I’ll let you know how it all turns out!

Day 9 ~ Here’s the Scoop!

It’s day 9 of the 10-day Countdown!! It’s time to share the blurb. Here’s what Love and the Hockey Heist is all about.

Love and the Hockey Heist is the second book in the Laugh-out-Loud Hockey Caper Romance series. Dr. Piper Roblin invites her new neighbour over to join a book club meeting, so she can get to know her and welcome her to the neighbourhood. Unfortunately, later that evening, Piper notices that her treasured travel alarm clock is missing. She suspects her neighbour took it and she wants it back!

I had the idea for this story because a similar situation happened to me, except it was the person I hired to clean my home who had sticky fingers. I didn’t clue in until I was chatting with a group of friends who all used the same person to clean our homes. We all had something missing! This was months later when we realized the connection and since it was impossible to know for sure, we didn’t do anything about it. Although I never did get my clock back, I’m happy to say I found a reliable and wonderful person to replace them. Now, I clean my home myself, but at the time with an active household, it was a godsend to have help.

Piper has a bit more gumption and she’s not going to rest without, at least, trying to get her travel alarm clock back! She ropes a very sexy professional hockey player into helping her and sets the stage for a fun hockey caper. This is the second book of the series and all of the (stand-alone) stories will have an element of white-collar crime – like a cozy mystery without murder! June 12 is the big day. Woohoo!

Another Countdown Begins!!

It’s the start of another countdown!! Woohoo! This time, it’s the second book of the Laugh-out-Loud Hockey Caper Romance series, Love and the Hockey Heist.

My latest series is a fun one! I love doing escape rooms with the challenge of clues to decipher and puzzles to solve. I thought I’d weave that type of white-collar crime mystery into a romance. Add in a smart, sassy doctor and a swoon-worthy professional hockey player, and the stage is set for a fun, clever hockey caper. The stories in this series will all be stand-alone, kisses-only romantic comedies with all the feel of a sexy romance – sweet with heat!

I’m excited to share the cover. I wanted the cover to be similar to the first story in the series, so I kept the same layout and font. I tried to keep it simple but eye-catching. I hope the font and the slightly off-beat hearts speak to the romantic comedy aspect of the story and the trophy is hockey – trust me, it is! 😀
