They can be Perfectly Together! #MFRWHooks

Posted February 9, 2021 By Linda

Welcome to the #MFRWHooks blog hop! Perfectly Together is in the spotlight today. It’s the sixth sassy, sexy medical romance in the Perfectly Series. All of the Perfectly romantic comedies are stand-alone stories, and Perfectly Together brings together all your favourite characters from the previous stories while you fall in love with the new couple.  Dr. Jayden Locke grew up an army brat and is more than ready to put down roots. Dr. Cole Cameron is an adventure seeking emergency physician with no plans to slow down or settle. Their hearts entwine – how’s that going to work?

Newly graduated naturopathic doctor Jayden Locke has a dream – start a practice in small-town Emerson and (settle in) never move again. She’s found the perfect office building to buy. It passes an inspection, design plans are drawn up, and the bank okays the loan. Only one problem.

Dr. Cole Cameron scoops it before she has a chance to submit an offer. What?

It’s a good investment. Cole isn’t interested in settling down. He works three jobs in three different towns and would just as soon keep moving. But something about Jayden’s defiant eyes and sexy smile makes him pause and reconsider.

What are the chances that a heart filled with wanderlust and a soul longing for a home fit Perfectly Together?

Enjoy an excerpt from Perfectly Together ~

A woman with an apron greeted them as they walked closer. “Hi. Any of you keen to help judge the butter tart contest? Tickets are three for five dollars.”

Cole pulled out his wallet. “Most definitely will.” He turned to Jayden. “Those raisin-lovin’ fanatics think they can beat out the plain team. Not gonna happen.” He raised an eyebrow at her. “Please don’t tell me you’re on the raisin team.”

“Sorry. I absolutely am. No raisins? Why would that even be allowed?”

Cole groaned and put his hand on his heart dramatically. “What? How could I have partnered with a raisin person? It should’ve been in the contract.”

Jayden laughed and handed five dollars to the woman. “Let the judging begin.”

Someone shouted a greeting to Cole, and he walked over to say hello. Jayden watched as the two men embraced in a bear hug and patted each other on the back.

“I don’t think I’ve met you,” said an older woman holding a tray of butter tarts.

“I’m Jayden Locke.”

“Oh. You’re the new family doctor in Emerson. On Market Street.”

“That’s right.”

“I’m Bea Alexander. Welcome to Strathaven. I work with Edna Mitchell to recruit new doctors, and we were tickled pink when we heard about you. Can’t tell you how much we needed another family doctor. Be better if you were closer to Strathaven, but Emerson’s only a hop, skip, and a jump away.”

Busy as a bee, Bea. “Thank you very much. I’m very happy to be here.”

She peered over her tortoise-shell frames. “Raisins or plain?”

“Raisins. Actually raisins and nuts.”

“Ooh. Double whammy.” Bea whipped the tray out of Jayden’s reach. “Well, never mind. You’re probably very nice. But I gotta save these for the voting crowd. We’re reigning champions. Can’t let Edna win.” She started to walk away. “Raisins and nuts.” She shook her head. “Kids these days.”

Jayden laughed. She watched as Bea walked over to Cole and his friend and offered them each a butter tart. Cole bent down to give Bea a hug and with a huge grin, scooped up a butter tart and popped it in his mouth in one bite. He kissed his fingers, exploded them, and waved a ticket in the air. Bea beamed and pointed to the judging box. Another vote on the way.

The group mingled around her, laughing with folks they met, trying butter tarts, and wiping gooey filling from their chins. A light breeze lifted the leaves on the trees around the park, making them rustle in quiet contentment. Carved pumpkins with happy faces, spooky eyes, and intricate designs lined the path. Other jack-o-lanterns with candles flickering inside were scattered in groups of two or three throughout the park. White fairy lights twinkled in the trees, making the stars look low in the sky.

Two children raced close to Jayden, and she took a quick step back with a smile.

“I hear you’re a nut.”

Jayden started and looked down at the woman behind the voice. Gray curls framed a round face and a wide grin that was hard to resist.

“Edna Mitchell. Pleased to meet you. Bea told me you’re in the nut camp.”

Jayden smiled. “Hi. I am. Nuts and raisins, if truth be told.”

“I hear ya. Nothin’ better.” She held out a tray. “These have raisins. We don’t do nuts in case someone has an allergy. Doctor Quinn nixed that a while ago. Wanna try one?”

“I would love to.” She picked one up and bit into it. A groan escaped her. She swallowed. “This is delicious. Holy cow. How did this not win last year?”

Edna chuckled and gave her a side hug. “I really like you. Don’t forget to vote. Oh, there’s Albert.” She leaned closer. “He swings either way. I better catch him before Bea gets her tart in him.” She gave a nod. “Lovely meeting you. Ta ta.” She started to walk away. “If you run into anyone who’s a raisin lover, send ’em my way,” she called over her shoulder.

Jayden finished the butter tart and watched Edna saddle up to Albert and offer him a taste.

“She should save her energy. There’s just no way raisins could ever beat out plain,” Cole said in her ear.

Jayden’s heart flipped as she turned toward his voice. “Really.” She gave him a pointed stare.

“Absolutely. Whoever thought that was a good idea tampered with perfection. Epic fail.”

Jayden gave a burst of laughter. “I don’t think so. Raisins, nuts, chocolate,” – she waved her hand – “only improve perfection.”

Cole gave a pained look. “Oh, another one lost to the dark side. What next? Hot chocolate without marshmallows. Thin Oreos. Whole wheat pancakes.”

“Yes, yes, and yes. It’s called healthy eating. Diabetes-preventing, cholesterol-lowering, artery-saving goodness.”

A young girl approached with a box of caramel-coated apples, and Cole pulled out his wallet. He bought two, and when the girl walked away, he handed one to Jayden. “Living to one hundred is overrated. Live a little.”

Jayden shook her head with a rueful grin and took the apple.

Be there for them!

Posted February 4, 2021 By Linda

Sometimes it’s hard to know what to say or how to reach out to someone who’s going through a rough time. But don’t let that stop you! Keep in touch. Even if it’s something short it can make a huge difference.

Talking to people who have made it through to the other side of depression, one common thread they mention is how they had a lot of anger toward people they loved. No matter how hard they pushed people away with their anger, they appreciated that the people who loved them plowed through it and stayed by their side.

Depression often comes with feelings of guilt and shame. So send a message that’s positive. The aim is to boost morale, encourage positive self-talk, and maybe normalize what they are going through. Most importantly, let them know they’re loved.

Here are examples of quick messages you can send:

It takes courage to change direction. It’s a step toward where you need and want to be. Love ya.

Right now you’re in a valley, but you won’t stay there. You’ve got this. Love ya.

Pamper yourself. Have another cookie. Love ya.

Be kind to yourself. It’s been a rough day. Love ya.

One step at a time, love. Keep moving forward.

Counseling is tough. But it’s a small step forward. Love ya.

You’re strong and resilient. You can do this. Love ya.

It feels like you’re in a bit of a tumble right now, but you will find your feet and stick the landing. Love ya.

Don’t think of this as a set-back, it’s more of a plot twist. Love ya.

Forgive yourself. Find the positive. Look forward. Love ya.

Life is just what works. I love you.

Make somebody happy (mostly your mom) and go out for a walk. Love ya.

Life feels chaotic right now, but you’ll unscramble the jumble. Hang in there.

Perfectly Christmas in the Spotlight! #MFRWHooks

Posted January 31, 2021 By Linda

Welcome to the #MFRWHooks blog hop! Perfectly Christmas is in the spotlight today. It’s the fifth sassy, sexy medical romance in the Perfectly Series and perfect if you’re having trouble letting go of the Christmas spirit. Dr. Madison Hayes and Dr. Quinn Malone dated back in university, but he moved on when she wanted to settle down. Now the tables have turned and she’s happily enjoying her new career as a surgeon in a small town. Between the folks in town afraid of losing Quinn, their only family doctor, to Madison when her 2-year stint is up, and Madison’s reluctance to give her heart away again, Quinn’s in for a rocky road.

On the first day of Christmas, his true love said to him, “Sorry, I have to work.”

That’s the life of a surgeon, and Dr. Madison Hayes wouldn’t have it any other way.

Dr. Quinn Malone has another priority. In the countdown to Christmas, he needs to convince his old flame that there’s more to life – and love – than the job itself.

This time, his heart is in it for the long haul. Really.

Romantic and . . . complicated – it’s Perfectly Christmas!

Enjoy an excerpt from Perfectly Christmas ~

Peggy stopped at the door. “Oh, one more thing. Did you want to be a part of the office Secret Santa? We pick names out of a hat, and each day during the twelve days of Christmas someone opens a gift.” She grinned. “Technically, we know, the twelve days of Christmas starts on December twenty-fifth, but we use it as a countdown to Christmas. We have a lot of fun with it.”

Madison hesitated. She wasn’t really big into exchanging presents. Stuff you didn’t need and wanted less. But Peggy and Nina were looking at her like it was the best thing ever.

Small town. Two years. Try to fit in. She sighed. She could always ask her sister for suggestions. “Okay, yeah. Sounds fun.” Translation: stressful.

Peggy’s grin widened. “I’ll be right back.”

After a moment, Peggy returned carrying a Christmas bag. She shook it and paper rustled inside. “Here you go. Pick one, but don’t tell us.”

Madison held back a sigh, reached in the bag, and picked out a piece of paper.

She unfolded it and her heart sank.

Quinn Malone. Dec. 24.

New Cover for Perfectly Honest!

Posted January 29, 2021 By Linda

It’s a new cover but the same great story – with a little less swearing. 🙂

The rights for Perfectly Honest have reverted back to me from Soul Mate Publishing. I’ll always be grateful to SMP for taking a risk on my writing and publishing my first story. Now I’ve republished Perfectly Honest under Interlock Publishing with a new cover. I’ve made some minor edits – after a bit of feedback I’ve cleaned up the language a bit and made sure they use condoms the second time around ;). If you haven’t read it – it’s a fun one. And it all starts with one little white lie.

You never know where your words will take you…

When Mikaela Finn agreed to be Sam’s “fiancée” for a weekend, she probably should have told him that she’s a doctor. Sam O’Brien, aka “Dr. Eye Candy,” is trying to shed his playboy reputation and convince a small town hospital that he’s ready to settle down. But when his “fiancée” helps deliver a baby in the middle of the meet and greet, it’s a bit of a shock. If he’d known the whole truth, he might have done things a little differently because somehow his “fiancée” ends up stealing his job and his heart. Not exactly the change he wanted.

Lies and deceit – it’s a match made in heaven!

Love is Perfectly Unpredictable! #MFRWHooks

Posted January 25, 2021 By Linda

Welcome to the #MFRWHooks blog hop! Perfectly Unpredictable is in the spotlight today. It’s the fourth sassy, sexy romance in the Perfectly Series. If you’re in the mood for a story that’s a little more serious, a bit of a tear jerker, than the others in the series, you’ll enjoy Perfectly Unpredictable. Kalia’s life takes a 180° turn when she finds out she’s pregnant after a one night stand and the father of the baby has a terminal illness. She moves into a new house to make a fresh start – and the guitar playing of the reluctant sexy neighbour is the only thing that soothes her colicky baby. She has to open her heart to new possibilities because falling in love is Perfectly Unpredictable …

Kalia Beck always dreamed of starting a family, living in a house with a white picket fence, and finding her soul mate. Just not in that order. Kalia is coping with an unplanned pregnancy when she learns the father has passed away. She soon finds out that single parenthood isn’t easy, especially when the only thing that soothes the baby is the guitar-playing of a reluctant and reclusive next-door neighbor.

Mack Challen, lead guitarist in a rock and roll band, knows it takes a village to raise a child. He just doesn’t think there’s a village big enough to help “gay momma” and her screaming baby.

Kalia and Mack aren’t looking for love and aren’t ready for each other, but when the future unfolds, it’s … Perfectly Unpredictable.

Enjoy an excerpt from Perfectly Unpredictable ~

Kalia pounded on her neighbor’s front door with her free hand. The other cradled a screaming Mani. In the last fifteen days, except for the past three, the neighbor had played his guitar from six until eight every night. And soothed Mani. It was the only thing that worked to calm the colic. No amount of rocking, walking, or singing worked to soothe the baby like fifteen minutes of guitar music. It was faintly amazing and fairly irritating that Kalia had to depend on the neighbor’s guitar playing.

He was home. She knew he was home. There was a new car in the driveway, and she could hear voices. So why wasn’t he answering the door? She pounded again.

The door swung open, and Kalia yelped at the suddenness of it. Mani screamed louder.

Mack frowned at them. “What?” he asked tersely.

Kalia groaned inwardly. It was the first time she had seen the neighbor close up. Six foot two, short dark hair with a sexy scruff, broad shoulders in a dark T-shirt, slim hips covered in worn sexy jeans, bare feet, and angry green eyes. Great. Just what she needed. A pissed-off lifeline. “Hi. I live next door. I need you to play guitar,” she said in a rush above Mani’s wailing.

“What?” His eyebrows winged up, and he put his hands on his hips.

“Why aren’t you playing guitar? You play guitar every night at this time.”

He shook his head. “I have company.”

“Well, you’re very good at guitar. I’m sure they wouldn’t mind listening to it for a few minutes.” Mani screamed louder. Desperate, Kalia strode in, noting that the layout to his home was the same as hers. Getting a fleeting impression of dark colors and sparse furniture, she moved past him into the living room. “Hello,” she said to the gorgeous brunette curled up on the dark leather sofa. “Would you mind very much if . . . he,” she gestured vaguely, realizing that she wasn’t sure of his name, “played guitar for a few minutes? Just a few minutes. It won’t take long.”

Mack followed her in. “Renee, this is my neighbor, half of the gay couple that lives next door, and her screaming baby,” he said wryly.

Kalia’s eyebrows shot up. “Yup, that’s me. The lesbian from next door,” she said with some chagrin. Is that what the neighborhood thought? She was living under a rock. “And we just need a little guitar music if you don’t mind.” She spied two guitars leaning on stands across the room and waved in their direction. “Whichever works.” Time’s a wastin’.

Perfectly Planned fun! #MFRWHooks

Posted January 19, 2021 By Linda

Welcome to the #MFRWHooks blog hop! Perfectly Planned is in the spotlight today. It’s the third sassy, sexy romance in the Perfectly Series. Chloe is a quirky – but loveable – character. She’s ready to have a baby – and has decided to meet the sperm donors in person. Uh-oh. She’s met her match in the unflappable Staff Sergeant Rip Logan.

She has it all Perfectly Planned . . .

Chloe Keay is on the hunt for the perfect sperm donor, but who knew it would be this hard? So many things to consider in a father – sure height and hair color are important, but what about the real issues. How does he feel about bagpipe music? Does he buy the extended warranty? Skittles or M&Ms? She doesn’t want an average Joe. She’s narrowed it down to two candidates and has the perfect plan to pick the heir and the spare.

Staff Sergeant Rip Logan, head of the elite Tactics and Rescue Unit, has a gut feeling that Chloe Keay is trouble. She’s a sexy little spark plug who radiates innocence, but it doesn’t jibe with her suspicious behavior and probing questions. The fact that he’s attracted irritates him. What exactly is she after? And should he go with his gut or follow his heart?

Enjoy an excerpt from Perfectly Planned

But with all the financial advice she was catching up on, she did notice one thing. The population was aging (Someone’s just figuring that out?) and there wasn’t going to be enough money in the pension plan. Hmmm. Apparently that was a problem. And not that she liked to think too far into the future, but it seemed you needed a retirement plan.

Not only was it ‘highly recommended,’ but, they stressed several days in a row, it had to be started by age thirty. Hmmm. Retirement plan at age thirty, who’d have thought?

Well, if that’s what kept the big bean counters from Money Market News up at night, she’d better sit up and listen.

She never had to worry about what to do with her ‘disposable income.’ Sheez. She disposed of it. It wasn’t that hard. (She should do a podcast or two for them.) “Don’t spend what you don’t have,” her mom always said. “Debt isn’t your friend,” her dad would chip in.

Her parents, sixty-nine, turning seventy in a week, shared the same birthday and the same financial vision. They were thrifty, but knew they needed more. Their retirement plan was simple—have six children. There was bound to be a high achiever among them.

They were right. Dale, the eldest, was a lawyer. Pamela, number two, a nurse. Devon, number three, a dentist. April was an electrical engineer. She painted houses and Cory, her twin, was a plumber.

For pretty much everything her parents needed, from house repairs to health questions, they had a child on speed-dial. And bonus, funds flowed freely to pay for their place in a retirement home.

Perfectly planned.

That’s the kind of retirement plan she was after. Maybe not six kids. Six was a bit of a handful, especially flying solo. But she could handle one, at least to begin with.

It would’ve been easier with Roger, but oh well, on to Plan B.

Sperm bank.

She had been poked and prodded and deemed a healthy receptacle.

But, oh how to choose which little swimmers to let loose? She needed smart (had to earn the big bucks), features similar to hers (hair color notwithstanding), family oriented (obviously had to love their momma), and not too nasally a voice (very annoying). They needed to be screened for reverse traits—ones that would make her wish she could reverse the whole process.

She needed more than the measly amount of info available online.

No problem. She had applied for a job as a weekend receptionist at the sperm bank, interviewed quite successfully (naturally), and waited patiently while they narrowed down their selection.

She had started three weeks ago.

The job was straightforward, certainly not as creative as painting. In fact, it was kinda slow. She liked the music in the waiting room, though, especially with her mouse clicking. She could get quite a beat going. Left click. Right click. Left-right-right click. She could see it catching on. In fact, it should be posted on YouTube because it’d give her something to watch at work, too.

She hadn’t lost sight of her plan, but it wasn’t obvious where all the data was stored. She had opened several files, but it wasn’t until she rocked and clicked to The Jaded Gentlemen, that lo and behold, the folder popped up.

Now, she wasn’t a computer genius or anything, but who uses 1234 as their password? You’d think all that confidential information about sperm donors would be behind a bigger firewall. Nope.

So, her two top matches now had names.

  1. Ripley Logan
  2. Jared Clayton

A few social media clicks later, and voilà, she set up friend requests with both.

Even better, it looked like Ripley’s baseball team had a rain-date game on Friday, seven o’clock, right here in Rivermede at Fairfield Park.

He was sporty. She clicked a happy beat.

She could go to the game and check him out. Try to learn more about him, but keep it quiet, fly under the radar.

She spun around in her chair and smiled. Perfect.

Looking back at the screen, she hovered the cursor over her profile picture. Redhead or blond?

What did that financial guru say? Plan carefully, go slowly, get the core established before exploring any specific tactical shifts.

Hmmm. Sounded like the redheaded photo should stay a little longer.

It’s Perfectly Reasonable! #MFRWHooks

Posted January 11, 2021 By Linda

Welcome to the #MFRWHooks blog hop! Perfectly Reasonable is in the spotlight today. It’s the second sassy, sexy, medical romance in the Perfectly Series. Margo is disenchanted with medicine and is painting to pay the bills. Trace has designs on medical school – and Margo. She’s his ticket to success – if he can convince her to help!

Love what you do and do what you love. Sounds perfectly reasonable, but chances are, you’ll find your passion in the last place you look . . .

Margo MacMillan finished medical school, but in the process, her self-confidence and self-esteem took a beating. So for the sake of self-preservation, she’s stepped away from medicine to re-group. In the meantime, painting soothes her soul and pays the bills.

Trace Bennett set his sights on a medical degree and has to prepare the perfect medical school application. His big plan is to paint his condo for a little feng shui divine luck. When Margo shows up to paint, he realizes he’s found exactly what he’s looking for. He just has to convince Margo to share more than the art of medicine.

She’s got it. He wants it. It’s Perfectly Reasonable.

Enjoy an excerpt from Perfectly Reasonable ~

“So, you’re a doctor,” Trace said slowly.

Jeez. Back to that. “Yup.”

“How come a doctor is painting my living room?”

“Because you’re paying twice the usual fee,” Margo said with a cheeky grin.

“Shouldn’t you be…doctoring?”

Her smile slipped. He sounded like her mother. All that time, all that money, blah, blah, blah. “I could be, but at the moment, I’m painting.” She pointed to the paint sample hanging on the wall. “That’s the color I chose.”

He looked over. “I like it. Hopefully it will work.”

“I think it’ll work. Blue’s a neutral color. Looks good in this lighting and it’ll be a great backdrop with your metal furniture.”

“Hm-mm. I’m hoping it’ll be lucky.”

“Lucky?”

“Feng shui. Water and metal elements, á la blue paint and metal furniture, in the west and southwest rooms are supposed to bring divine luck this year. Good bye beige and wooden antiques.”

She smiled at him. He wants to get lucky? Look at those abs. Really, any color would do. “Sounds like you’ve researched this.”

He took a sip of coffee and set the cup down. “I have. I’m applying to medicine. Again. I’m giving it one last chance, and this time I’m doing it properly.”

“Medicine.”

“Yes.”

“And you think feng shui will help?” She reached for a small tool in the outer pocket of the tote bag and used it to pry open the lid from the first can of paint.

“Couldn’t hurt. And I want to cover all the bases. If I can get a little divine luck on my side, I’m all for it.”

She smiled at him as she stirred the paint. Hopefully he had more than feng shui up his sleeve. “I’ll get this done and get you started. I’m happy to help.” Especially if it meant her bills would get paid.

“Are you? You could be handy.”

“Oh I’m definitely handy,” she said with a smile.

Perfectly Honest (they aren’t) #MFRWHooks

Posted January 5, 2021 By Linda

Welcome to the #MFRWHooks blog hop! Perfectly Honest is in the spotlight today. It’s a sassy, sexy, medical  romance. After inadvertently chasing off Dr. Sam O’Brien’s “fiancée”, Dr. Michaela Finn reluctantly agrees to play the role of fake fiancée for “Dr. Eye Candy”. But when the little white lie spirals out of control, they’re in for a wild ride!

You never know where your words will take you…

When Dr. Mikaela Finn agreed to be Sam’s “fiancée” for a weekend, she probably should have told him that she’s a doctor. Sam O’Brien, aka “Dr. Eye Candy,” is trying to shed his playboy reputation and convince a small town hospital that he’s ready to settle down. If he’d known the whole truth, he might have done things a little differently because somehow his “fiancée” ends up stealing his job and his heart. Not exactly the change he wanted.

Lies and deceit – it’s a match made in heaven!

Enjoy an excerpt from Perfectly Honest ~

Mikaela woke with a start to the sound of voices. Disoriented, in unfamiliar surroundings, she looked down at her short shorts and loose shirt covered with spatters of paint. Painting, of course. She finished the job late and must have fallen asleep in the chair. Checking her watch, she saw that it was two o’clock in the morning. She rubbed her eyes and yawned. Pulling herself out of the chair, she listened to the voices. One voice was female, sounding impatient and unhappy and one male, sounding apologetic and resigned.

“I know it’s not ideal, Sophia, but it’s what I want. I’m tired of the large city, the tertiary care center, and all the politics. I’m tired of all the meetings and all the committees. I want a smaller hospital in a smaller city. I want a life.”

“Nonsense, Sam,” the woman shot back. “You don’t know what you want or what’s good for you. You need to pay your dues now to reap the benefits later.”

“Look, I don’t expect you to understand. I’m grateful you’ve agreed to help me out, but . . . ”

Mikaela wandered into the hallway and stopped when she saw the two of them at the front door. The woman had unbuttoned her coat, and as she put her hands on her hips, there was a flash of the red cocktail dress she wore underneath. The man was a foot taller and wearing a suit. A very nice fitting suit, Mikaela mused, as she came up behind him.

The woman noticed Mikaela first, and her startled gasp had the man looking over his shoulder. Mikaela wasn’t sure who looked more shocked, the man, who moved to shield the woman, or the woman, who raked her gaze over Mikaela from head to toe. As Mikaela fought the urge to straighten her shirt and fix her hair, she decided, definitely, the woman.

The woman’s eyes narrowed, the hands on her hips became clenched at her sides, and her face flushed red. Mikaela held her breath.

The woman pushed at the man’s shoulder and spun him around to face her. “Why you! You! ‘I can’t invite you in, the house is being painted,’” she mimicked. “Is that the new code word for ‘mistress?’ You could have just told me we were through. Well, I’m done. This is the last straw. You pig!” The woman spun on her heel and wrenched the door open.

“Sophia, wait!”

“No, wait,” Mikaela added. She lurched forward, now wide-awake.

The woman stormed out and slammed the door.

The man turned to Mikaela with his hands on his hips. “Who are you?”

Don’t Mess with Christmas! #MFRWHooks

Posted December 23, 2020 By Linda

It’s time for another MFRW  Book Hooks blog hop! I have two Christmas romances filled with love and laughter – Don’t Mess with Christmas is a sweet romance and Perfectly Christmas is sexy. Each is part of a series, but they’re fun stand-alone stories and both are part of Kindle Unlimited. This week Don’t Mess with Christmas is in the spotlight! Despite all the restrictions and uncertainty right now, I hope that you find peace this holiday season and have moments filled with love and laughter.

Parker Roy grew up in the middle of four brothers and has lived with enough testosterone to last her a lifetime. She’s finally moved out and made a life of her own. Between putting the finishing touches on the set for Mapleton’s Christmas play, plowing snow, and transforming her hydroponic greenhouse into a Christmas wonderland, it’s ramping up to be a hectic season.

Dr. Julian Murphy, the only allergist in town, has his eye on the woman behind the set design of the holiday play. He’s volunteering backstage in the hope of getting to know her. There’s a bit of a snag when she’s referred to his clinic for a rash – doctors aren’t allowed to date their patients – but Dr. Brogan Corkie doesn’t see it as an insurmountable problem and steps in to give their romance a nudge. She’d better be right because, if not, it could seriously mess with Christmas.

The allergist or the rash– which itch will Parker scratch?

Get a grip. Mary’s Boy Child. Dates are supposed to be fun. Her shoulders sagged. If only.

She blew out a breath. Was this all worth it? She could be in comfy sweats, with a big bowl of buttered popcorn, curled up on her favourite chair watching a movie. Cozy, fun, stress-free.

Her cell phone rang making her jump. “Hello?”

“What are you wearing?”

Parker smiled reluctantly. Hailey Gibson, her best friend since grade two, got right to the point. “Yoga pants and a hoodie.”

“March yourself into that bedroom and change right now. You are going on that date.” Hailey tsked. “I’ll be there in five.”

“No need. I’m kidding.” Parker pursed her lips. “I’m wearing black plants and a blue sweater.”

“The fitted ones that go to your ankle?” Hailey’s voice was suspicious.

“Yes.”

“The cashmere sweater with the low back and pearl buttons?”

“Yes.”

“Jewelry?”

Parker rolled her eyes. “Pink and yellow crystal pendant with the matching earrings – the dangly ones.”

“Perfume?”

“Definitely not.”

“Okay, maybe you’re telling the truth.” Parker imagined the consternation in Hailey’s blue eyes. “Maybe.”

Parker laughed. “I am. I can send you a pic.” She leaned against the bathroom counter. “Oh ye of little faith.”

“Huh. I know you too well, Parker. Any little excuse and you’d be backing out of that date. I’m not going to let that happen. Should I come over to drive you?”

Parker sighed. “How did you know I was having second thoughts?” Her voice was quiet.

Her best friend didn’t even say I told you so. “Twin vibes.” Parker’s eyes filled. “Parker, just relax and try to enjoy yourself. You put too much pressure on yourself. You think every date is an interview for marriage. Don’t. Sometimes people get together to have fun and…enrich their souls.”

Parker harrumphed. “I don’t need my soul enriched.”

“Maybe Julian does. Look, he sounds like a great guy – talented, smart, easy on the eyes. And he’s taking you to Fire and Ice. Not a bad way to spend a Friday night. Pretend he’s one of your brothers. No scratch that. Pretend you’re meeting to discuss the stage set. Just give him a chance – get to know him.”

Parker made a face. “I always seem to say something stupid and blow it.”

“You can’t blow it, Parker. You can’t have a relationship if you have to watch what you say. Your true soul mate will overlook an occasional blunder.”

“Is that supposed to be reassuring?”

“Yes.”

Parker held the phone away from her ear. Ouch.

Hailey continued at a lower volume. “If you don’t jibe, it wasn’t meant to be. No harm, no foul.”

“I suppose.”

“And if you don’t mesh, you can get the rash sorted out. It’s a win-win.”

Parker laughed ruefully. “I guess. In a pique of bravado I told him that all my dates were fantastic. Nothing could be further from the truth.”

“Repeat after me. I am kind and considerate, have a great sense of humour, am a smart, successful businesswoman, and I’m fun to hang out with.”

“I’m a mess.”

Hailey laughed. “No, that you are not. You’ve got your shit together, Parker. You just need to ratchet that confidence up a notch.”

“I’m trying.”

“You go, girl. It’s 6:40. No more stalling. Put on some lipstick so you don’t look anemic, a little blush to cover the pallor, and get ’er done.”

“All right. Will do.”

“Send me deets.”

Parker shook her head with a laugh.

“Have fun.” Hailey had been a cheerleader in high school. Pep talks were her thing.

“I’ll try.”

“That’s the spirit,” Hailey said dryly.

Parker hung up the phone with a chuckle.

She fastened the necklace and earrings, her hands no longer shaking. She looked at herself once last time in the mirror and squared her shoulders. “Here goes nothing.”
