It’s Perfectly Christmas! #MFRWHooks

Posted December 14, 2020 By Linda

It’s time for another MFRW  Book Hooks blog hop! One of my favourite Christmas traditions is setting the table with Christmas crackers. Before we start to eat, we pull open the crackers with a bang, put on the paper crowns, and go around the table reading the fun fact or joke. Some of them are pretty corny, but they’re definitely fun! Here are a few to brighten your day:

How much did Santa’s sleigh cost? A: Nothing – it was on the house!

Why does Santa always enter through the chimney? A: Because it “soots” him.

What do you call an elf who sings? A: A “wrapper”.

I have two Christmas romances filled with love and laughter – Don’t Mess with Christmas is a sweet romance and Perfectly Christmas is sexy. Each is part of a series, but they’re fun stand-alone stories and both are part of Kindle Unlimited. Despite all the restrictions and uncertainty right now, I hope that you find peace this holiday season and have moments filled with love and laughter.

On the first day of Christmas, his true love said to him, “Sorry, I have to work.”

That’s the life of a surgeon, and Dr. Madison Hayes wouldn’t have it any other way.

Dr. Quinn Malone has another priority. In the countdown to Christmas, he needs to convince his old flame that there’s more to life – and love – than the job itself.

This time, his heart is in it for the long haul. Really.

Romantic and . . . complicated – it’s Perfectly Christmas!

Enjoy an excerpt from Perfectly Christmas ~

Edna Alexander and Bea Mitchell stood at the window of the seniors’ center and watched the new surgeon drive out of the parking lot.

“She’s very young, Bea.”

“And very pretty,” Bea agreed with a frown. She adjusted the tortoise shell glasses perched on her nose. “Didn’t we specify we wanted someone old, someone frumpy?”

“There wasn’t a tick-off box for that.”

“Hmph. There should’ve been.”

They watched the car pull out onto the street and hit the curb as it turned.

“She drives like us.”

“True. And look at the bright side, Edna. If we need surgery, it’d probably be better to have a young whipper-snapper doin’ it rather than some old fart like us.”

“I’m more worried about losing Dr. Quinn.”

Bea pursed her lips. “I know. But what are the chances of that happening?”

Edna gave her a grim sideways glance. “I’d have said slim to none three weeks ago. But when Dr. Hoity-Toity Hecktare decided she’d had enough of us, and Dr. Quinn looked like he was going to go with her, I almost had a stroke. I would never have believed he’d abandon our beloved Strathaven for a girl.”

“Woman,” Bea corrected absently. “Do you think he truly loved her?”

Edna shook her head and her gray curls bounced. “No.” She bit her lip. “Yes. That’s what I’m worried about. What if he up and falls in love with this new surgeon and leaves us?”

“We’d have a town of five thousand with no doctor.”

“Exactly. We’d be right back where we were five years ago before Quinn returned home.”

“And we’d have to go through another round of recruitments for a new doctor. I rue the day when someone from the Underserviced Area program figures out that we’re the Mitchell Alexander who’s been filling out all those forms.”

“A problem for another day.” Edna sighed. “Maybe she’ll stay. Dr. Madison Hayes. She seemed very friendly. Very small-townish.”

Bea grunted. “Not likely. You read her application. I’ll bet my boots she’ll do her two years and move on.”

“And take Quinn with her.” Edna twisted the strap of her oversized purse. “We can’t control his heart.”

“No. But we can’t risk him falling in love, either.”

“So we’ll keep them apart.”

Bea’s eyebrows shot up and she paused, considering. “That’s not a bad idea.”

“Of course, it’d be easier if he wasn’t also the only anesthetist for miles around. They’re going to have to work together.”

“Sure, but they’re professionals. I can’t see them getting into any hanky-panky at work. We’ll just make sure they’re never alone together outside of the clinic.”

Edna grinned widely. “Excellent plan. I’ll get on the blower, and before she unpacks, we’ll have a network of chaperones in place.”

“Email me the list.”

“Send me an email, and I’ll reply.”

Bea looked at her pointedly. “Edna, you gotta learn how to send an email.”

“I know how,” Edna said. “You hit reply, then type, then send.”

Bea laughed and threw her arm around Edna’s shoulders. “I think I’ll get you a computer lesson for Christmas.”

Edna’s eyes lit up. “A private one? With that hotty Albert Sparkle?”

Bea stepped back and started buttoning her coat. “Albert’s one hundred and two. And I think the name is Spartan. Does he even own a computer?”

“Yes, and he’s rigged himself up the perfect cup holder with this little drawer thingy that slides out at the top of the computer engine.” Edna pulled a crocheted cap over her curls.

Bea frowned. “You mean the CD tray on the tower?”

Edna smiled. “Maybe. Isn’t that brilliant?”

Bea laughed. “You two were made for each other. C’mon, let’s go and start Operation Put Out the Fire.”

Pass the Salt Shaker!

Posted December 8, 2020 By Linda

For every mineral and vitamin that we consume, there is a U-shaped risk of disease. It can be unhealthy to consume too little or too much, so the goal is to hit the sweet spot for health.

Salt is a tricky mineral because not only do we add it to cooking water and keep the shaker handy at the table, it’s hidden in all kinds of food – from eggs to breakfast cereals to bread. In the past, the recommended salt intake was 5-6 grams per day (roughly less than a teaspoon a day) or 2 – 2.4 grams of sodium a day. We know that the effect of sodium on blood pressure is greater in patients with high blood pressure (hypertension) and hypertension is a risk factor for heart disease and stroke. A low sodium diet recommended for people with hypertension sometimes went as low as 1.8 grams of sodium a day. Not only was this very difficult to adhere to, people complained that it changed the taste of their food (and not in a good way).

Well, good news– a new study done has shown that the optimal sodium intake is higher than we previously thought. The recommended amount of sodium for health is between 3 – 6 grams a day with 2.3-4.6 grams a day being optimal. It was also found that potassium, which is found in fruit and vegetables, was protective and helped to moderate sodium levels. So don’t go crazy with the salt shaker, but know that you don’t have to be quite so restrictive as previously thought.

Plant-based milk for children – is it safe?

Posted December 1, 2020 By Linda

I recently (virtually) attended the Food as Medicine Update conference hosted by the school of medicine at the University of Toronto. I thought I’d pass along some fun medical facts that I learned.

Breast milk is preferred until 12 months of age. (That’s nothing new.)

milk in a heart cupOnly whole cow milk or infant formula are recommended for children between 1 and 2 years of age. (Soy milk has similar fat content to 2% milk and whole cow milk with a fat content of 3.25% is recommended, so that’s why soy-based formulas are preferred over soy milk for 1-2 year olds.

For children older than 2 years of age with cow milk allergy or for families who prefer a plant-based milk, fortified soy milk is the only plant-based milk that is recommended. Almond, rice, coconut, hemp, flax seed and cashew “milks” cannot replace cow milk because they do not meet a child’s nutritional requirements and may compromise growth. Who knew? You’d think they’d all be fortified with additional nutrients to simulate cow milk, but that’s not the case. Cow milk is the only milk that is legislated to provide roughly 104 IU of vitamin D per cup.

For parents concerned about hormones or antibiotics in cow milk, know that it is illegal in Canada. Dairy cows are not permitted to receive exogenous hormones or antibiotics outside of illness. It is closely regulated. (Not so much in the USA so it’s more of a concern there.)

Chapter 1 Don’t Mess with Christmas

Parker Roy took the turn into the parking lot of Mapleton’s Centre for the Performing Arts a little too sharply and felt her tires skid. She swore and corrected the path of her Ford F-150. Between the heavy blade on the front of her truck and the load of sand in the back, she rarely lost control, but eighteen long hours of plowing and shovelling were catching up with her. That little burst of adrenalin should help get her through the final push.

Day 2 of the 10-day Countdown!

Posted October 31, 2020 By Linda

It’s day 2 of the 10-day Countdown!! I’m sharing some of the inspiration behind Don’t Mess with Christmas. It’s Book 4 of the Dr. Brogan Corkie Matchmaking Doctor series ~ a delightfully funny medical romance! Come escape with me! November 2 is the big release day. Woohoo!!

Last summer, I toured some of the farms in my area. It was a day called Open Farms organized by local farmers. They opened their doors and gave a glimpse into what running a farm entails. One farm, Sun Harvest Greenhouses, grows hydroponic tomatoes and cucumbers. That gave me the idea for Parker’s job. Sun Harvest also has a small boutique shop attached to their greenhouse where they sell their vegetables, other plants, and local artists’ wares. I used that idea and added a space to Parker’s greenhouse that Parker transforms into a Christmas Shoppe.

In Don’t Mess with Christmas, the hero, Julian Murphy, has a stunning house – with plenty of natural light streaming in through big windows, a designated artist’s studio, an awesome kitchen, and –wait for it – an indoor basketball court. I had the idea to include the basketball court because, a few years ago, one of the houses we wanted to buy had exactly that – a full-sized indoor basketball court. I loved it! When winters are so long, I thought it would be the coolest thing to be able to spend time inside in a gym! We didn’t end up buying that house, but the next best thing is to write about it, and live there vicariously through my hero. 🙂

Day 3 of the 10-day Countdown!

Posted October 30, 2020 By Linda

It’s day 3 of the 10-day Countdown!! In Don’t Mess with Christmas, Julian Murphy and Parker Roy go out to find the perfect real Christmas tree. With all the choice, how to decide which type of tree to buy?

Don’t Mess with Christmas is Book 4 of the Dr. Brogan Corkie Matchmaking Doctor series, a humorous Christmas contemporary romance! November 2 is the big day. Woohoo!

Here’s an excerpt from Don’t Mess with Christmas when Parker is explaining the pros and cons of the different varieties of Christmas trees.

“Are you looking for balsam fir, Scotch pine, or white spruce?” Parker asked, getting out of the truck and walking around to join Julian.

“So many? I figured my choice would be Scotch pine or Scotch pine.” Julian picked up a saw from the back of the truck.

“Yup. That’s why I like this farm best. Jeff Donaldson grows all three, and he also has a selection of Douglas fir and Fraser firs that he ships in.”

“The only thing I know about Christmas trees is what I tell patients who want a real tree but need one with very little scent. For them I recommend white pine.” He grinned. “Or better yet, a fake one.”

“A fake tree? Blasphemy. Allergies aside, ya gotta go with balsam fir. They smell heavenly. Take a lot of water, but that pine scent more than makes up for it.”

They made their way to where a tractor idled. The wagon hitched to the back was almost full. They climbed aboard and sat down on a hay bale, squished close together.

“The only drawback with a balsam fir,” Parker said, “is that the branches are a bit flimsy. If you like a lot of ornaments, you’re better off with a Fraser fir. A white spruce would work, too, for weightier decorations, but you have to be careful not to crush the needles ’cause they’ll stink.”

Julian put his arm around Parker’s shoulders. “Lights only. I’m good there.”

Parker blinked at him, feigning shock. “What do you mean, ‘lights only’?”

“I haven’t accumulated any ornaments yet.”

“Go to the dollar store and load up.”

“What? No.” He poked her in the ribs. “Blasphemy. They have to mean something; have a story behind them.”

“Ah, you’re sentimental. That’s so cute.” She knew what she could make him for Christmas. “Then any tree will do.”

Day 4 of the 10-day Countdown!

Posted October 30, 2020 By Linda

It’s day 4 of the 10-day Countdown!! Dr. Brogan Corkie is sharing her recipe for chilled Roasted Peach Soup – it’s deeeeelicious!

Don’t Mess with Christmas is Book 4 of the Dr. Brogan Corkie Matchmaking Doctor series ~ happily-ever-after sweetness! November 2nd is the big day. Woohoo!

Chilled roasted Peach Soup

4 ripe large peaches, peeled, halved, and pitted

1 ½ cups granulated sugar

2 cups peach nectar (plus more if needed to thin)

1 star anise, cracked

1 vanilla bean, split

juice of 3 oranges (roughly 1 cup)

juice of 1 lemon

2 sprigs fresh mint

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Lightly coat a baking sheet with butter. Place the peach halves, cut side down, on prepared baking sheet. Sprinkle peaches with ½ cup sugar and bake for 15-20 minutes until well roasted.
  2. Transfer peaches to a food processor, along with any drippings from the baking sheet. Puree until smooth, stopping 2-3 times to scrape down the sides. Transfer to a large nonreactive bowl and set aside.
  3. In a small nonreactive saucepan, combine peach nectar, remaining sugar and star anise over medium heat. Use the tip of a blunt knife to scrape the vanilla bean seed into the mixture. Bring to a boil and then remove from heat. Let syrup infuse for about an hour in a warm place. Strain through a fine sieve into a nonreactive bowl and add citrus juices.
  4. Tasting as you go, slowly add the peach syrup to the peach puree until desired flavour is achieved. If the soup is too thick, thin it with a little plain peach juice. Cover and refrigerate until completely cool.
  5. Serve in chilled bowls and garnish with mint. Enjoy!

The server interrupted them with the main course. Steam rose from Julian’s fish with a tempting lemon peppery scent. It was served with a rice pilaf and colourful roasted vegetables.

Parker’s Rocky Mountain oysters had been battered and deep-fried. She frowned. Why would you ruin the delicate flavour of an oyster by deep-frying it? She’d only ever slurped it out of the shell, but she’d have to trust that the executive chef at an upscale restaurant like Fire and Ice knew what they were doing.

“Bon appétit.” Parker picked up her knife and fork and cut into one of the morsels. It was tougher than she expected, and the taste reminded her of cauliflower. “Interesting. I’ve had oysters before, but this is quite different.”

Julian swallowed a mouthful, his eyes twinkling. “You do know there are no oysters in the landlocked Rocky Mountains?”

“What? The Pacific Ocean is right there.”

“Not quite. I may be wrong, but I believe Rocky Mountain oysters are bull testicles.”

“That’s ridiculous. Who would eat bull testicles? Who would offer bull testicles on their menu?”

Julian cocked an eyebrow. “You. Fire and Ice.”

“Are you serious?” Parker wiped her mouth with the napkin and stared at her plate. “Oh my god. That’s disgusting.”

Julian laughed. “I thought it was an interesting first date strategy, letting me know that you’re tough enough to chop balls off and eat them.”
